Semantic Engines that Match Business Problems

There is no single semantic extraction approach that is appropriate for every application need. Statistical technologies are effective in gaining a conceptual understanding of what a document is about as statistics typically compare the frequency of word occurrence within a document to the frequency of word occurrence in general. 

For example, Research, Discovery and Information Access applications require statistical engines to categorize, classify, and cluster documents and the concepts in those documents in order to help business users find topics and content that they are looking for. E-Service applications also leverage this capability, but derive added benefit from a deeper understanding of concepts contained in service content in order to deliver actionable service information to agents and end-customers. Natural language approaches enable users to understand the relationships between topics so that users can not only find the data they are looking for but understand the meaning of it, without having to manually read it. Analysts now spend time analyzing versus sifting through data. Analytics applications such as Intelligence Analysis and Voice of the Customer are served best by a combination of statistical and natural language approaches.

Artificial intelligence enables applications to learn from user interactions and the data. For example, if a user marks a response to a customer inquiry as the most accurate response, the system will know to use that response when answering similar inquiries in the future. In essence, the system actually learns from the data that is put into it and the response the business user has to the data.
